The annual Flieger Magazine Award winners are determined by Flieger Magazine's more than 18,000 readers and only awarded to the best the aviation industry has to offer.Friedrichshafen, Germany (April 25, 2016) — Lightspeed Aviation, the world’s leading innovator in aviation headsets, has won the coveted Innovation of the Year Award from Flieger magazine for its wireless Tango aviation headset. The announcement was made at the Flieger Magazine Awards ceremony at AERO Friedrichshafen 2016. Flieger nagazine is one of Europe’s leading aviation publications and winners of the Innovation of the Year award are chosen by its more than 18,000 readers.

“We want to thank the readers of Flieger Magazine for selecting the Tango headset as the winner in the innovation category.” said Teresa De Mers, Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Customer Support for Lightspeed. “Coming on the heels of a prestigious Red Dot award for design, we are humbled by the recognition Tango is getting. Most importantly of course, is how pilots and their passengers like the product, and we are very pleased with the PIREPs that have been coming in from all over the world.”

According to Lightspeed, Tango replaces cables with a patent-pending combination of analog and digital technologies called Lightspeed Link™ to create a reliable wireless signal that delivers high-quality audio and clear communications.

“Knowing that neither Bluetooth or WiFi would produce acceptable levels of performance, our engineers spent more than two years developing a wireless solution that would meet the unique demands of the aviation environment,” added De Mers.

In another aviation headset first, Tango is powered by custom rechargeable lithium ion batteries. The batteries, which measure just 1.375″ x 2.125″ and weigh just one ounce, deliver twelve continuous hours of use and can be easily swapped out for a fresh set. With an eye on the type of redundancy that pilots appreciate, Lightspeed also added a backup cable that is also stored in the control box (called the “panel interface” for its roll as the communication hub between the panel and headset).

“We’ve packed a lot of thoughtful innovation into Tango,” noted De Mers. “Lightspeed strives to design and build products for the aviation community that enhance the enjoyment and passion for flying. It is a passion we share.”
