Aviation No Tie Downs: NavGeeks teach us the sport of Navigation Flying

June 26, 2023

NavGeeks - Navigation Flying

They call themselves the NavGeeks. In this episode of Aviation, No Tie Downs, Teresa De Mers, Executive Vice President at Lightspeed had the opportunity to talk with Oliver Meindl and Robin Shearer of NavGeeks in Germany at the Aero Friedrichshafen Show in April of 2023.

The NavGeeks introduce us to Navigation Flying – in simplest terms, a general aviation sport of flying as precisely as possible. They teach us what skills are required of the pilots, how navigation flying is different from other aviation sports and how this discipline is more than just “spot the tree!”. Typical disciplines range from flying a constructed course within seconds to recognizing predetermined images along the course to precision landings.

The NavGeeks were also honored to represent their home country of Germany in the world championship competition in South Africa, and they share their story of a stressful high wind landing during the competition.
